Welcome to The Spot Writers. This month’s prompt is “spring has sprung”.
This week’s story is written by Phil Yeats. Last fall, he published The Souring Seas, the first
volume in a precautionary tale about the hazards of ignoring human-induced
climate change. The second volume, Building Houses of Cards, is
due out in the coming weeks. For information about these books, visit his

An Ode to Spring
by Phil Yates
She stormed into his study. “Beautiful spring day. You should be
outside cleaning up the mess from winter.”
He smiled, having anticipated this typical springtime
tirade. “I’ve been composing a poem, and ode to spring.”
“Then let’s hear it.”
“If spring is sprung, as they’ve said,
Why is the snow above my head?”
“Harrumph,” she replied. “I thought odes were positive,
reverent exaltations about your subject. Yours hardly meets the criterion. And
what sort of crap are you trying to push, anyway? It hasn’t snowed for a week,
and that was only an inch or so.”
“Six days ago, actually. And I’m entitled to a little
poetic licence.”
He rescued the lawnmower from under the accumulated detritus of
winter and rolled it out onto the lawn.
“And now it’s spring, as I’ve said,
There’s the grass above my head.”
He sneezed as the blade bit into the two-inch-high
grass. “Hay fever, as usual. I guess it really is spring.”
