Welcome to The Spot Writers. The prompt for this month is “winter is coming.”
This week it’s Cathy MacKenzie’s turn. Her writings are found in numerous print and online publications. She writes all genres but invariably veers toward the dark—so much so her late mother once asked, “Can’t you write anything happy?” (She can!)
She recently published WHEN KAYAKS FLY, a mix of fantasy, real life, and gallows humour. This book was made possible after three years of Spot Writers’ prompts—after much editing and re-writing. Available on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1990589332.

Winter Is Coming
by Cathy MacKenzie
Halloween and Remembrance Day: over and done like a shot from a gun, and all that’s left for 2024 is an open door for Christmas and holiday fare with festivities and flare,
With the upcoming celebrations across the nations, we feel the chill on the other side of the hill, see branches becoming bare in the days’ glare and hovering grey skies with our wide eyes,
Days grow shorter, nights stretch even longer, and gloomy canvases loom, waiting for snow so white and spring to bloom with colourful paint,
As winter carves its way, scarves wrap us tight, mittened hands are shoved in pockets, plans are altered,
Footsteps crunch on frozen leaves, breaths spiral as if chimney smoke, and we welcome beckoning hearths that crackle with song so strong,
Family hovers ’round the fireplace as if new-found friends, drinking wine so fine, munching snacks like Cracker Jacks and chips with dips, and memories we share, songs we sing,
We forget the wrongs,
We anticipate more beauty to come: sparkling snowflakes, white blankets upon the ground, lace-etched window panes,
Beyond the frost and cold, spring lingers to warm the chill...
