 Philosophers and Politicians

 “Peace,” the street corner philosopher said, using his most unctuous tones. “Peace and love, that’s what we must stress during these trying times. Feeling blue will not do. There’s light at the end of the tunnel. With goodwill and compassion, we’ll get there.”

“Who does he think he is?” I muttered as we pushed past. “Spouting platitudes with no mask at a congested spot where passersby can’t easily maintain social distancing. He never says anything new, and his voice, it makes me sick.”

“Reminds me of the PM when he’s trying to emphasize his sincerity,” my companion, someone more cynical than me, if that’s even possible, replied. “As if any politician could claim sincerity.”

Her negative comment got me thinking about our philosopher with his sandals and scraggly beard. Was he sincere in his efforts to lift everyone’s spirits, or just another politician crassly manipulating words?
